Industrial development of Mangystau region

Mangystau region is located in the southwestern part of the Republic of Kazakhstan, bordered by Atyrau and Aktobe regions in the northeast, by sea with the Russian Federation, Azerbaijan and Iran in the west, Turkmenistan in the south and Uzbekistan in the east.

The territory of the region is 165.6 thousand square kilometers, which is 6.1% of the total area of the territory of Kazakhstan and ranks seventh among the regions of the republic.

The main industrial specialization of the Mangystau region is the chemical industry, mechanical engineering, the production of refined petroleum products, the construction industry, the metallurgical industry and transport and logistics are the leaders among the industry.

The volume of industrial production in the region by the end of 2021 amounted to 2,726.7 billion tenge, including 187.6 billion tenge – manufacturing industry, whose share in total industrial production reached 7% (Figure 1).

In 2021, the turnover of mutual trade of the Mangystau region amounted to 4,671.5 million US dollars. Of these, imports amounted to 516.2 million US dollars, exports – 4,155.3 million US dollars (Figure 2).

The volume of the gross regional product of the region for 2021 amounted to 3,627 billion tenge (Figure 3).

In 2010-2021, 61 projects worth 670.6 billion tenge were commissioned within the framework of the Industrialization Map and the Entrepreneurship Support Map of the Mangystau region, about 6.2 thousand permanent jobs were created. The largest number of commissioned projects is located in the city of Aktau – 34 projects or 56%, Aktau is also the leader in terms of investments – 374.1 billion tenge. Of the projects introduced, 39 projects totaling 210.2 billion tenge belong to the manufacturing industry, 3,280 permanent jobs have been created. At the same time, among the projects of the manufacturing industry, the construction industry and the woodworking industry are leading in terms of the number of projects commissioned (10 projects or 26%) totaling 52.2 billion tenge, the chemical industry is leading in terms of investments with 7 projects totaling 64.4 billion tenge.

In the perspective of the region until 2025, a common pool of 38 investment projects worth 1.1 trillion tenge has been formed, with the creation of more than 3.8 thousand permanent jobs.

This year, it is planned to launch 9 projects worth 18.8 billion tenge, with the creation of 557 jobs, of which 3 projects have already been commissioned for a total of 2.5 billion tenge, 125 permanent jobs have been created.

The main area of projects being introduced in the region in 2022 is mechanical engineering. Thus, the enterprises plan to establish pumping equipment, couplings, fiberglass finished products and other products.
