The city of Almaty is located in the south-east of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Almaty is the scientific, cultural, historical, industrial and financial center of the country.

The volume of the gross regional product of the region for the 1st half of 2022 amounted to 6,898.4 billion tenge and has grown 1.3 times over the past 5 years (Figure 1), the share of the gross regional product of Almaty is 17.2% of the total volume in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The share of the manufacturing industry in the total volume is 5.2% or 357.5 billion tenge.

As of October 1, 2022, there are 99,175 operating legal entities in Almaty, including 97,661 small (98.5%), 1,018 medium-sized (1%) and 496 large enterprises (0.5%). Out of the total number of operating enterprises, 4,527 enterprises belong to the manufacturing industry, including 4,418 small, 69 medium-sized and 40 large enterprises, which is 4.6% of the total number of enterprises.

The volume of industrial production in the region in January-September 2022 amounted to 1.2 trillion tenge, including 1.1 trillion tenge – manufacturing industry, whose share in total industrial production reached 87.5% (Figure 2).

The foreign trade of Almaty in the first half of 2022 amounted to 11.3 billion US dollars. The structure of the region's trade turnover is dominated by imports – 79.6% or 9 billion US dollars, exports – 20.4% or 2.3 billion US dollars.

In terms of export volumes for the 1st half of 2022, Almaty is in sixth place among other regions of Kazakhstan and occupies 5.4% of the share.

In 2010-2021, 117 projects worth 482.9 billion tenge were commissioned within the framework of the Industrialization Map and the Entrepreneurship Support Map of Almaty, about 12.5 thousand permanent jobs were created.

The largest number of commissioned projects is located in Zhetysu district – 30 projects, inter–district projects - 227.2 billion tenge in terms of investments. Also, among the projects of the manufacturing industry, the largest number of projects have been introduced in the production of food products – 19 projects, the production of cars, trailers and semi–trailers is leading in terms of investment - 49.3 billion tenge.

In the future, the region has formed a common manufacturing industry pool of 81 investment projects worth 636.8 billion tenge, with the creation of about 9,433 permanent jobs.

Since the beginning of the year, 1 project has been introduced, in the amount of 1,250 million tenge with the creation of 60 jobs. By the end of the year, it is planned to launch another 1 project worth 5.5 billion tenge with the creation of 30 jobs.

The sphere of the project being introduced in Almaty in 2022 is mechanical engineering. Thus, the enterprises plan to establish the production of mining equipment, medium-voltage complete distribution devices of the Unisafe type.
